So... does anyone have any ideas how to calculate for alpha in the log5 formula?

Sorry-- I'd like to figure the alpha for the Skiena formula. I've also never seen the Bill James log5 formula, so if anyone has data on that I'd be interested. Another question: What do people think about using BP's third-order win% in lieu of actual win% for these formulae?

To clarify: I am assuming the alpha for Skiena's formula is different in baseball than in jai alai. I'd like to apply Skiena's formula to baseball and see how well it holds up. Guidance on how to calculate that alpha would be much appreciated.

I could be wrong, but I would think that batting Manny #3 that year would have gotten him even more ribs-- Alomar isn't there to clear the bases, and Manny gets maybe 50 more abs. It's possible that gets counterbalanced by not having Berto's .400+ OBP in front of him, but my instinct would be that Manny batting #3 and playing 162 games would get pretty darn close to the record.

Does anyone keep this stat on a regular-season basis? (I imagine it would take a lot of time, so my suspicion is no.) I can't think of a more useful stat for settling MVP/Cy Young debates than this offhand.

Taken in concert with defensive stats and a small fudge factor, of course.

Tango-- You're totally right that this thing could get really messy. I think it would be really useful, though. Let me know if you need any help running numbers.

For hitters, I just need basic stat projections a la ZIPS. (Hits, doubles, triples, runs, hr, rbi, sb, cs, bb, and k).
For pitchers, I need er, w-l, ip, and so.
I assume that would all be covered by Marcel's projections, but I wanted to make sure.
Thanks a lot. I'll cut you in on any profits, which will probably not be worth the postage.
